Brief reflections (a post by Domh)

Always learning.

As I try to reclaim the parts of my brain that melted and dribbled onto the floor, I note every ache and twinge from the strenuousness of the weekend.

I am so grateful for the family I’ve acquired through belly dance.  When you host someone that you know you like, but then actually get to spend quality time talking with them and really getting to know them?  I am awed by my people.

Normally I cringe when I know company is coming, as I am notoriously private about the inner sanctum that is my home…but I absolutely adore and look forward to having my dance peeps in my cave.  They fill the walls with laughter, impropriety, and conversation that really makes you stop and give serious thought to things you hadn’t even considered before.

Putting together a group choreography long-distance?  Any  other group, I would have said, “No way!”…but us?  Psssshhh!!!  We rocked the eff out of that!

I can safely speak for Kat and myself when I say, from the bottom of our leafy hearts, THANK YOU.  Thank you to our “Fambly” for making the northern journey and supporting us.  We adore and cherish each and every one of you.

Coming up in May…

Detroit Raqs 2013 is fast approaching…

We’ll be teaching a workshop based on some of our favorite sticky, slow movements and combinations…while attempting to break them down and explain the muscle movement and mechanics that go into each fluid motion.

Hope to see you there….register here:

As always…we love to hear from you. If you have questions, comments or requests…contact us!

Okay, now the real fun begins!

Good morning, lovelies.

This whole putting an event together business has been quite the learning experience.  *chuckles*

While we in no way procrastinated on this baby, we still could have started the planning even further back than we did–which boggles the mind, because I (Domh) worried we were starting too early!  Not so much.

A few key items:

  • Early pricing is over, it’s gone up slightly now to $40/workshop or $70/both.
  • The venue is at a school, so it is a family-appropriate show–no nekkideness or cursing–some of the school staff may be present for this event!
  • Tickets are on sale now, $15 in advance or $18 at the door.
  • We will be selling raffle tickets ($1/ticket, $5 for 6, etc) with several fun prizes donated from a few local businesses and artisans, as well as dear friends and family.
  • There may be a silent auction for a few art pieces and some other items, but that is still TBA.
  • Showcase participants must be registered for at least one workshop or make a donation for the raffle or silent auction.

We are super excited about this…getting everyone up to Traverse City for a change, and of course having the incomparable Na’imah here to teach us awesome things.  ‘Cause you know we’re not-so-in-the-closet Bollywood geeks!

As always, if you have questions about anything, don’t hesitate to e-mail us at

Summer time…when the living is…weird

Hey everyone!

It’s been a couple of months, so I just thought I would post a brief update on what’s new and exciting in Raks Incendia-land.

Well, there you have it!

For the first time in two years, there’s really not a whole lot going on for us this summer…at least right now.  Last year we were away almost every weekend at different events, but June and July this year?  Not so much.

I think it has to do with the fact that the usual events just aren’t happening this year like they were last year, and…we’ve made some decisions about what and where we will and/or won’t perform.

It has presented us with the opportunity to work on new projects without the added pressure of an impending show…so that has been really nice.  It has also us more to spend with our families and just be.

For myself, I can say that on one hand I am incredibly depressed that I am not out on the road dancing and getting to see all of our awesome friends in Michigan and other places.  On the other hand, it has been a bit of a blessing…because of what’s going on in my private world.

One of my closest friends is getting married July 23rd and I am the M.O.H…I am also making the wedding dress.  This particular friend, Ivy, lives in Portland, so I am handling a lot of details in her absence…namely the dress, but also the flowers.  I also have an actual day job that requires my attention five days a week from 8-5, martial arts training…oh, and college which I attend online.

That said, it looks like the end of this month will see some activity for Raks Incendia.  There are a couple of local events we will probably attend, and I was recently contacted by someone who wants us to come downstate for an event as well.  October will be the big one, though…*cackles*

We are working on a few new concepts for October,  but of course we will be able to perform them at other times in the year.  They just have to be ready by October.  🙂

I also believe there is talk of a workshop with some new Raks Incendia-style choreo created just for you guys…so stay tuned for those details…

In the interim until we are invading a town near you, feel free to e-mail us or leave comments with any questions or particular (peculiar ones are good, too) remarks…we would love to hear from you!
